Regenerative Medicine Q & A
What is regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is a branch of medicine that utilizes tissue regeneration technology to support the natural healing process for tissues in the body, including bone, cartilage, ligament, and muscle. At Weiss Orthopedics, the team uses the highest quality regenerative medicine products available for effective relief from joint pain and injuries.
The team can recommend regenerative medicine for you if you’ve tried other conservative treatments without success but want to avoid invasive procedures for your condition. Regenerative medicine has fewer risks than open surgery and may be the alternative treatment you need to heal and get back to your favorite activities pain-free.
What types of regenerative medicine are available?
Weiss Orthopedics offers cutting-edge regenerative medicine products like:
Nerve Allografts and Connectors (Axogen® AxoGuard)
Axogen products include nerve grafts, nerve connectors, and nerve protectors to repair damaged peripheral nerves associated with carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, and radial nerve entrapment.
Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (Carticel®, MACI)
Carticel products are used to promote bone and cartilage cell growth from your own tissue samples. Carticel is recommended for cartilage repair when a tissue graft can be used from a healthy area of your joint to repair a damaged area. Carticel reduces the need for donor graft tissue, which reduces the risk of graft rejection and infection.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, is produced from your own blood. The platelets are the cells in our body that contain growth factors, which stimulate the normal wound healing process. With PRP, you create a supra-therapeutic level of your own platelets so that you heighten the healing of a chronically injured tissue.
Fat Transfer / Mesenchymal Stem Cell injections (Lipogems®)
The Lipogems System is a medical device used to collect and process a sample of your adipose (fat) tissue to encourage healing at the treatment site. Lipogems can be used in many different joints throughout your body to repair and regenerate damaged tissue.
Based on your symptoms and diagnosis, the team works with you to determine if regenerative medicine is the best solution for your needs.
Am I a candidate for regenerative medicine?
Regenerative medicine is recommended for people who are healthy and wish to avoid open surgery for their joint pain or injury. Since regenerative medicine products are made from your own tissues, Dr. Weiss first assesses your overall health and medical history to determine if your tissues can be used for a regenerative procedure.
If you have a history of blood clots, slow wound healing, or a chronic condition like diabetes, you may not be a candidate. Discuss your options with the team during your consultation to determine if a regenerative procedure is right for you.
